Ron Gilbert has finally announced a new entry in the Monkey Island series titled Return to Monkey Island and it’s due to be released this year! View the trailer below now!

The trailer reveals precious few details, however, we know that the game is being made by the guys behind Thimbleweed Park, Terrible Toybox,  Disney owned LucasFilms games (responsible for the first 5 entries in the series) and Devolver Digital.

The teaser trailer shows the evil ghost pirate LeChuck’s ghost ship being loaded by his crew in port. A speaking cameo from Murray, the talking skull from 1997’s Curse of Monkey Island, is our standout moment. Also, the violin version of LeChuck’s theme is enough to send shivers down the spine of the hardiest grog swilling pirate.

Protagonist Guybrush Threepwood will be once again voiced by the incredible Dominic Armato. Dominic has voiced the character in all releases since Curse of Monkey Island in 1997. He also voiced Guybrush in the remasters of both Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

The trailer links to a teaser site returntomonkeyisland.com which has a beautifully designed render of Melee Island™. Clearly visible on top is the lookout point from the first scene of Secret of Monkey Island, the Governor’s mansion where Elaine Marley lives and the Scumm Bar.

Being described as a “follow up to Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChucks revenge”, it is currently unclear how this fits into the Monkey Island series especially as the teaser trailer shows Murray from Curse of Monkey Island. Interestingly we have to wonder whether the wonderful Escape from Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island series will get a mention too.

Remaining true to form, Ron first predicted he’d only announce a new Monkey Island game on April Fool’s day and boy did he get us.

We’ll find out more details in time but for now, it’s hard not to get excited at the prospect of catching up on the misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood.
