If you weren’t already aware from our last post gushing over the teaser trailer for the new Return to Monkey Island earlier this month, you’ll know how excited we are to revisit the classic adventure series’ world once more.
Swashbuckling as Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate™, will bring the kid out in us again and we’re loving the new screenshots that have just been teased by the developer, Devolver Digital and LucasFilm Games. These new visuals show the future direction of the series.
The screenshots give just a taste of what we can expect from the game’s art style and direction and they look simply gorgeous. Moving away from 3D games to a more traditional 2D set-up will excite adventure game fans a lot. And the cartoony visuals are a welcome return to form for a series that at times feels like you’re playing an animated film.
Perhaps the most exciting thing for us at HitStart is seeing locations like the alleys of Melee Island reimagined with crisp visuals and being given a fresh lease on life for a new brand audience.
This will be the first outing for Guybrush since Tales of Monkey Island was released in 2009 by Telltale Games. The episodic game was well-received by fans and critics alike and at the time was Telltale’s most successful game.
We’re still none the wiser on how Return to Monkey Island fits into the story or whether it reboots the series to some time before the third instalment; Curse of Monkey Island. Time will tell, but we can guarantee you won’t want to miss this.
What do you think HitStart fans? Are you excited to revisit one of retro gaming’s all-time great series?
